The consonant for this column is M, so all five members of this group will be
M followed by one of the five vowels, in order.
- ま [MA]
- み [MI]
- む [MU]
- め [ME]
- も [MO]
This is another straightforward group, like K and N.
How to Write
For reference, here is a quick review of the general rules for stroke order:
- All characters should fill a square of about the same size
- Top to bottom, left to right
- Horizontal strokes before vertical strokes that intersect them
Be aware that め [ME], like ぬ [NU], starts with the vertical stroke on the left. Also, も [MO] bucks the last rule and starts with its vertical stroke before doing the two crossing strokes.
The following words can be written using only the characters we have covered so far. Once you’ve practiced reading them a couple of times, try writing them on a piece of paper without looking and see how well you do.
- みみ [mi mi] ear
- かも [ka mo] duck
- かむ [ka mu] to bite
- かみ [ka mi] god, spirit, deity
- め [me] eye
- めし [me shi] meal
- もも [mo mo] peach
